Fixtures Built Into the Stone Itself

A hardscape fixture is designed to be recessed or surface-mounted on stone, brick, or concrete. The housing is flush with the surface and casts light from within the masonry, keeping the source discreet. The low-profile faceplate directs light to wash a defined surface. The LED lights are energy-efficient and rated for tens of thousands of hours.

Every hardscape fixture runs on the same low-voltage landscape lighting system that powers the rest of the property. Transformer sizing, wire gauge, and circuit layout are planned for the full load.

Types of Hardscape Lights & Where They Go

Three fixtures are used in LED hardscape lighting, each designed for a different location in the masonry.

Recessed Riser & Stair Lights

A recessed stair light with an integrated LED is installed into the face of each riser. The fixture washes the step below with an even spread of light while clearly marking the edge. On longer runs, fixtures are spaced to provide consistent light from top to bottom.

Lighting Built Into Walls & Pillars

A wall fixture is recessed beneath the top cap and aimed downward to graze the surface below. On a pillar, the fixture is positioned beneath the cap to wash the column and illuminate the ground at its base. The fixture remains recessed, leaving the wall or pillar as the visible element.

Paver & Surface-Mount Fixtures

Where a paver walkway or a pillar cap does not allow a recess, a low-profile surface-mounted fixture is secured to the material. These fixtures cast light across the path or surrounding grade while keeping the fixture profile low. Fixtures near driveways and walkways are located with snow removal in mind.

How do I choose the right hardscape lights?

The right hardscape lights depend on the surface, architectural details, and the desired effect after dark. During a free on-site consultation, we walk the property to assess these factors and use what we learn to create the lighting plan. The plan determines the appropriate fixture type, placement, and wattage for each area.

How often should I replace my outdoor lights?

There is no fixed replacement interval for outdoor LED lighting. LED lamps are rated to last for tens of thousands of hours, so replacement is generally needed only when a lamp or fixture reaches the end of its service life. Every installation includes a one-year workmanship warranty, with a maintenance plan available afterward that includes spring and fall visits. Maintenance visits include a check of the bulbs and fixtures.

How many hardscape lights can one transformer handle?

There is no single number. Capacity depends on how many fixtures are on the run, how far they are from the transformer, and the energy each one draws. Larger properties may require more than one transformer.

Can lights be added to a patio or wall that is already built?

Yes. Fixtures are recessed by core drilling into the masonry, and wiring is worked through the joints between stones. Where the stonework is still going in, sleeves for future wiring are placed before the masonry is completed.

How is hardscape lighting different from landscape lighting?

Hardscape lighting is built into the stonework of a property, into steps, walls, pillars, patios, pool decks, and driveways. Landscape lighting places fixtures at the base of trees and planting areas, along paths, or up in the tree canopy to light lawns and gardens from above. Most lighting plans combine several of these techniques, creating a cohesive look across both the stonework and planting areas.

What mistakes should be avoided when lighting outdoor steps?

Glare and uneven coverage are two common mistakes to plan around on outdoor steps. A fixture that sends light toward the eyes of someone walking down the stairs can make the treads harder to see, while gaps between fixtures can leave some treads noticeably darker than others. The lighting plan accounts for the condition and material of each step, along with the amount of light needed for safe movement, while careful aiming keeps the light source hidden.

Can hardscape lights be put on a schedule or controlled from a phone?

Yes. Your system can be scheduled to turn on in the evening, adjusted for seasonal changes, and programmed so certain areas dim later while others maintain their setting. Steps and walls can be grouped into their own lighting zones and controlled separately. The lighting can be controlled from a switch, phone, or smart device and integrated with platforms such as Lutron, Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, Savant, Control4, and Crestron.
