Hardscape Lighting for Patios, Walls & Walkways
Blue Hour Lighting installs low-voltage fixtures directly into stone patios, retaining walls, and steps. The masonry is highlighted, while the light source remains out of sight. Before fixtures are ordered or work begins, a detailed lighting plan is prepared for your approval so you can review the proposed design in advance.
Hardscape Lights Keep Stone Visible After Dark
The distinctive details in stonework disappear without the right light. Fixtures housed in the masonry illuminate those surfaces and bring the texture into focus after sundown.
Fixtures Built Into the Stone Itself
Every hardscape fixture runs on the same low-voltage landscape lighting system that powers the rest of the property. Transformer sizing, wire gauge, and circuit layout are planned for the full load.
What Integrated Hardscape Lights Change
Integrated fixtures set into the steps, walls, and paving around outdoor spaces light the way and give the property a warm, finished look at night.
Safe Footing on Stairs & Grade Changes
Step lights set into the risers illuminate the edge of every step, providing both beauty and safety underfoot. At changes in elevation throughout the property, the fixtures clearly define each transition and help guide the way.
Stone Detail Visible After Dark
Light aimed close to the face of a wall picks out the lines, joints, and texture a mason worked into the surface. Grazing brings out depth and variation in the stone.
More Time Spent Outside
Fixtures in the surrounding walls, steps, and fire pit areas turn those spots into places people want to gather in the evening. The patio and the backyard serve as outdoor living spaces well after sundown.
Types of Hardscape Lights & Where They Go
Three fixtures are used in LED hardscape lighting, each designed for a different location in the masonry.
Recessed Riser & Stair Lights
A recessed stair light with an integrated LED is installed into the face of each riser. The fixture washes the step below with an even spread of light while clearly marking the edge. On longer runs, fixtures are spaced to provide consistent light from top to bottom.
Lighting Built Into Walls & Pillars
A wall fixture is recessed beneath the top cap and aimed downward to graze the surface below. On a pillar, the fixture is positioned beneath the cap to wash the column and illuminate the ground at its base. The fixture remains recessed, leaving the wall or pillar as the visible element.
Paver & Surface-Mount Fixtures
Where a paver walkway or a pillar cap does not allow a recess, a low-profile surface-mounted fixture is secured to the material. These fixtures cast light across the path or surrounding grade while keeping the fixture profile low. Fixtures near driveways and walkways are located with snow removal in mind.
What's Included in Every Installation
The lighting plan shows every fixture location and aiming direction, the fixture type and wattage at each location, transformer locations and cable paths, and the number of lighting zones the design needs. Each hardscape lighting installation includes:
Free on-site consultation for a home.
A dedicated Blue Hour Lighting professional visits the property to assess how the outdoor areas are used after dark, which entrances and paths need attention, and which architectural and landscape features should be visible.
Detailed lighting plan.
The plan is drawn over a diagram of the property and comes with a written estimate.
Professional-grade fixtures.
Cast brass, copper, and stainless steel fixtures from Kichler, CAST Lighting, FX Luminaire, Brilliance LED, Auroralight, Unique Lighting Systems, and Infinity Lighting are specified by location and condition.
Low-voltage installation.
Cable is run through narrow trenches around existing landscaping, using outdoor-rated waterproof connectors. Fixtures are core-drilled into existing masonry, and where new stonework is still going in, sleeves are coordinated before the work is finished.
Final adjustment.
Every fixture is set in place and fine-tuned, with output directed to the intended surface and glare and light spill controlled.
One-year workmanship warranty.
After the first year, an optional maintenance plan is available to keep the system performing properly.
Blue Hour Lighting follows the same landscape lighting installation process on every property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hardscape Lights
How do I choose the right hardscape lights?
How often should I replace my outdoor lights?
How many hardscape lights can one transformer handle?
Can lights be added to a patio or wall that is already built?
How is hardscape lighting different from landscape lighting?
Hardscape lighting is built into the stonework of a property, into steps, walls, pillars, patios, pool decks, and driveways. Landscape lighting places fixtures at the base of trees and planting areas, along paths, or up in the tree canopy to light lawns and gardens from above. Most lighting plans combine several of these techniques, creating a cohesive look across both the stonework and planting areas.
What mistakes should be avoided when lighting outdoor steps?
Can hardscape lights be put on a schedule or controlled from a phone?
Yes. Your system can be scheduled to turn on in the evening, adjusted for seasonal changes, and programmed so certain areas dim later while others maintain their setting. Steps and walls can be grouped into their own lighting zones and controlled separately. The lighting can be controlled from a switch, phone, or smart device and integrated with platforms such as Lutron, Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, Savant, Control4, and Crestron.
